CBSE Class 12 History syllabus for the academic year 2025-26, as per the official curriculum released by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).

The syllabus is organized into three parts, each focusing on different themes in Indian history. 


Part I: Themes in Indian History – I (25 Marks)

1. Bricks, Beads and Bones: The Harappan Civilization

Exploration of early urban centers and archaeological findings.

2. Kings, Farmers and Towns: Early States and Economies (c. 600 BCE–600 CE)

Study of political and economic structures in early states.

3. Kinship, Caste and Class: Early Societies (c. 600 BCE–600 CE)

Examination of social hierarchies and family structures.

4. Thinkers, Beliefs and Buildings: Cultural Developments (c. 600 BCE–600 CE)

Insights into religious and philosophical developments. 


Part II: Themes in Indian History – II (25 Marks)

5. Through the Eyes of Travellers: Perceptions of Society (10th to 17th centuries)

Accounts of foreign travelers and their observations.

6. Bhakti-Sufi Traditions: Changes in Religious Beliefs and Devotional Texts (8th to 18th centuries)

Study of devotional movements and their impact.

7. An Imperial Capital: Vijayanagara (14th to 16th centuries)

Analysis of the Vijayanagara Empire's architecture and administration.

8. Peasants, Zamindars and the State: Agrarian Society and the Mughal Empire (16th to 17th centuries)

Examination of agrarian relations and rural life. 


Part III: Themes in Indian History – III (25 Marks)

9. Colonialism and the Countryside: Exploring Official Archives

Study of colonial policies and their impact on rural India.

10. Rebels and the Raj: 1857 Revolt and its Representations

Insights into the causes and consequences of the 1857 uprising.

11. Mahatma Gandhi and the Nationalist Movement: Civil Disobedience and Beyond

Analysis of Gandhi's role in India's independence movement.

12. Framing the Constitution: The Beginning of a New Era

Understanding the making of the Indian Constitution.


Map Work (5 Marks)

Identification and location of important historical sites related to the above themes. 


Project Work (20 Marks)

Students are required to undertake a project on a topic related to the syllabus, encouraging research and analytical skills. 

Objective:

To enable students to:

  • Explore historical events/issues through research.
  • Develop inquiry, analysis, interpretation, and presentation skills.
  • Connect textbook knowledge with real-life contexts.

Structure of the Project Work (As per CBSE Guidelines):

Total Marks: 20

  • Project File (Handwritten Report) – 5 Marks
  • Viva Voce (Oral Exam) – 5 Marks
  • Content Accuracy, Creativity, and Presentation – 5 Marks
  • Data Collection, Analysis & Interpretation – 5 Marks

Project Topics (Suggestive List):

You can choose any ONE topic. Here are some CBSE-suggested themes:

  1. Harappan Civilization – Town planning and architecture.
  2. Buddhism and Jainism – Comparative study of philosophies and spread.
  3. Ashoka’s Dhamma – Its relevance and interpretation.
  4. Gupta Period – Art, literature, science, and political expansion.
  5. Delhi Sultanate or Mughal Empire – Administration, culture, or architecture.
  6. Bhakti or Sufi Movements – Their influence on Indian society.
  7. 1857 Revolt – Causes, consequences, and legacy.
  8. Mahatma Gandhi – Methods of resistance and mass mobilization.
  9. Partition of India – Its human, social, and political dimensions.
  10. Constituent Assembly Debates – Formation of the Indian Constitution.

Format of the Project File:

  1. Cover Page – Title, student name, class, roll number, school, year.
  2. Acknowledgement
  3. Index
  4. Introduction
  5. Research Objectives
  6. Methodology – How you gathered your data (books, interviews, internet, etc.)
  7. Content/Body – Well-organized information with headings/subheadings.
  8. Analysis/Interpretation
  9. Conclusion
  10. Bibliography
  11. Appendices (if any)
